Appearance:
Otto is the most beautiful man you have ever seen. Well, okay he is really over-muscled and that kinda make him look like a freak, but still, in the opinion of those guys at fighting gyms always lifting weights, running treadmills, and making you feel bad about your body, he is the perfect standard of masculinity. Standing around 6'3", He has medium-length, curly dirty-blonde hair, blue eyes, and immaculately cleaned teeth. His informal clothing is a white shirt several sizes too small for him, workout shorts, and running shoes. His formal clothing is the same white shirt, a polo several sizes too small for him, khaki pants and dress shoes. Despite the fact that he almost constantly works out, he keeps enough spare clothes that you almost never see sweat marks on them-- this is a man that knows that appearance matters, and constructs his accordingly.

Personality:
Otto is generally a nice guy, although maybe a bit too enthusiastic about tough contests. He could talk for hours about the perfect workout method, or the latest trends in the contest circuit, and doesn't really notice that others probably don't care. He doesn't care for pokémon battling, as it ruins the art of performance toughness. Still, this doesn't stop him from realizing that battling is an important and sometimes life-saving action, and won't shy away from necessary combat. Otto is an enthusiastic man that wants everyone else to be enthusiastic as well-- this may mean trying to put more lethargic group members to workout routines.

Backstory:
The Pine family has a strong tradition of research. The children in the family were born to pokémon researchers, studied to be pokémon researchers, and died as pokémon researchers, their hands on their last scholarly article. With his two older siblings both working in the field research, and his father urging him to study heavily as a child, it would seem that, despite being much more handsome and athletically-inclined than the average Pine family member, Otto would be destined for the same fate as his family dictated.

But that all changed one fortuitous day when Otto was eleven years old. He was walking home from his summer school (it wasn't remedial-- his family expected him to skip a few grades like his older siblings), when he heard loud oohs and ahs from a nearby building. Curiosity got the best of him, and he snuck in. Inside he saw something beautiful.

They were the master-rank tough contests. Otto marveled at the incredible feats of strength the pokémon demonstrated, gazed in awe at how the handsome trainers with women clinging to them received gigantic checks for being able to show off their strength and that of their pokémon. It was as if a spell had been cast-- Otto found his purpose in life.

He began checking books out from the local library on how to form a proper workout schedule. He took a job as a paperboy-- it not only involved exercise, but it also gave him just enough money for a membership at a (humans-only) gym. He would neglect his homework in order to perfect his training and conditioning. He grew happier by the day, and his body grew into a handsome, if extremely bulky, form. His grades slumped from these pass times, however, and his family grew furious. What was wrong with their son? They tried talking to him, but he explained that he wasn't that interested in schoolwork. Worried that their son would not become a prominent pokémon researcher, they banned his access to the gym.

However, this just made Otto work harder to achieve his dreams. He would spend the little time he had between long school hours and tutoring session absconding to his stash of weights he had purchased and hidden in a back alley. It was through these hidden workouts that he found Gideon.

One night, after Otto leaped from his second-floor window and maneuvered through Lilycove's streets towards his sanctuary, he heard rustling, clanking and grunting. He cautiously turned on a flashlight, and to his surprise learned that someone was using his weight sets besides himself.

A Machop. The duo instantly knew that they were bound to be a team. They spent that whole night (and many subsequent ones) training together, giving each other pointers, and providing support, until one day, Otto gave the Machop a proposition: He would allow Otto to catch him, and in exchange they would work together to be the best, toughest coordinator-pokémon team in all of Hoenn. With a thumbs-up and a hearty "Chop!" the deal was sealed, and the Machop now known as Gideon, The World's Strongest Machamp (Otto is anticipating future evolutions), was captured with a white flash of a pokéball.

While Otto grew stronger and more toned, his home life grew more strained. After graduating high school, he announced to his parents that he did not plan on becoming a scientist, but instead a tough contest coordinator. They did not receive this news well. Things were said, by everyone, that could never be taken back. Otto left home teary-eyed and hurt, and vowed not to return until he had won every yellow ribbon that this damned island had to offer.

Since then, however, he hasn't even been able to enter a contest. He has mostly been drifting from job to job, while occasionally being able to put in a few hours as a male model here and there. He and Gideon have only barely been able to get by-- even with the extra money from the modeling jobs.

However, Otto has a feeling that his luck is about to turn around. After he and Gideon modeled for a new scented potion line from Devon Corp, he was given (in addition to regular payment), a coupon to the Lilycove department store, where he immediately went to purchase iron vitamins for Gideon. To his astonishment, he found a ticket in the packaging, inviting him and his pokémon to a chance-in-a-lifetime event. How could he say no? He hopped on the next ferry leaving Lilycove and excitedly awaited his arrival on Boon Island.
